Spinning Plates and Tufting Rugs. A Tale of Entrepreneurial Survival

Welcome aboard the rollercoaster that is entrepreneurship, where the highs are dizzying, the lows are stomach-churning, and the twists and turns are enough to make even the bravest souls reach for the nearest barf bag.

As co-creators of SISU, we’re here to dish out the real talk about the wild ride of starting and growing a small business. So buckle up, buttercup, because we’re about to spill the tea on the importance of self-care and creativity in the chaotic world of entrepreneurship.

Picture this: it’s a crisp morning, birds are chirping, and we’re staring bleary-eyed at our never-ending to-do list, wondering if we’ll ever catch a break. Cue the lightbulb moment: rug tufting. Yes, you heard that right. In a desperate bid to escape the relentless grind of business ownership, we decided to dip our toes (and fingers) into the world of textile artistry.

Now, let’s set the scene: two frazzled entrepreneurs armed with yarn and determination, attempting to craft the perfect rug while simultaneously avoiding poking each other in the eye with the tufting tool. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t exactly a smooth operation. But hey, nobody said entrepreneurship was supposed to be easy, right?

In the immortal words of Thomas Edison,

“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

And let me tell you, we’ve found plenty of ways that won’t work in our journey as small business owners. It’s been a rollercoaster of rejection and resilience from being ghosted by potential clients to doubting our own worth.

But here’s the thing: amidst the chaos and the occasional existential crisis, we’ve learned a thing or two about the importance of taking care of ourselves. Because let’s face it, burnt-out entrepreneurs aren’t exactly the poster children for success.

We’ve seen the signs of burnout in ourselves at SISU when the creative juices aren’t flowing, when we get through a SISU day of work and the to-do list hasn’t shifted.

That’s why we prioritise injecting a little fun and creativity into our lives, even if it means temporarily trading in our CEO hats for arts and crafts aprons. As the saying goes, “You can’t pour from an empty cup.” So go ahead, and indulge in a little rug tufting, or whatever floats your entrepreneurial boat. Your brand will thank you for it.

And to all our fellow small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs out there, remember: you’re not alone in this crazy journey. Lean on each other, laugh at the absurdity of it all, and never lose sight of why you started in the first place.

So here’s to spinning plates, tufting rugs, and embracing the messy, marvellous adventure of entrepreneurship. And to all the dreamers and doers out there, keep hustling, keep creating, and above all, keep your SISU shining bright.
